Introduction Games (Sharemath)

Teacher shows a sharemath games using CD.

Teacher asks pupils to count and answer the questions.
Teacher: I want you to answer the questions.

Teacher introduces the lesson.
Teacher: Today, we are going to learn addition of lengths.

Step 1 Introducing addition of lengths involving units;
Millimeter
Meter and centimeter
Centimeter and millimeter
in vertical form without conversion. Teacher uses Microsoft Power Point to introduce addition of lengths in vertical form.

Teacher shows two ribbons with different measurements.
Teacher: I want you to measure these two ribbons. Write it on the paper.

Teacher guides pupils to write the number sentence and find the total length of the ribbons.
Teacher: Then, you count the total length of these ribbons. Firstly, you’ve to write in number sentence.
e.g: 67 mm + 87 mm = _____mm

Teacher explains the concept of addition in vertical form without conversion.
Teacher: you can count this question in vertical form.

Teacher proceeds with other questions.
Teacher: Now, I want you to look at this example. Try to solve this question in vertical form.
e.g: 56 cm + 43 cm =_____

56 cm
+ 43 cm
__99 cm

Teacher guides pupils to convert 99 cm to meter using concepts of fractions and decimals.
Teacher: Now, I want to show you, how to convert this measurement to meter using fractions and decimals.
Teacher asks pupils: How many centimeters are there in 1 meter? (100 cm)

Teacher: Now, you know that 1 meter is equal to 100 cm. Alright, I give you this grid paper with 100 boxes.

Teacher: Alright, now I want you to shade 99 boxes from these 100 boxes.
Teacher: Now, 99 cm are out of 100 cm in fraction is 99/100. From here, we know that 99/100 is equal to 0.99.

Step 2 Introducing addition compound units.
e.g: meter and centimeter and convert the answer to meters. Teacher gives questions:
e.g:
7 m 60 cm + 3 m 45 cm = ______m

Teacher asks pupils to write the questions in vertical form.
Teacher: Please write this number sentence in vertical form.

Teacher guides pupils to add starting with cm and regroup when necessary.
Teacher: Start adding with cm. If the answer is more than 100 cm then, we must do the regroup.

7 m 60 cm
+ 3 m 45 cm
10 m 105 cm

Add 60 cm and 45 cm. The total is 10 m 105 cm.
105 cm = 100 cm + 5 cm

Write 5 cm, regroup 100 cm to 1 m.
Add 1 m + 10 m. The total is 11 m.
The answer is 11 m 5 cm.

Partition 11 m 5 cm into 11 m + 5 cm, and convert 5 cm to meter using concept of fractions and decimals.

11 m 5 cm = 11 m + 5 cm
= 11 m + 0.05 m
= 11.05 m

Step 3 Work It Out! Teacher asks pupils to take 2 paper strips with different colour and measure separately on their desk.
Teacher: Please take this paper strips. Each of you must have two paper strips with different measurements.

Teacher asks pupils to measure the first paper strip then, the second paper strip.
Teacher: Take out your ruler and measure the first paper strip followed by the second paper strip.

Teacher asks the pupils again to write the measurements on the paper strips.
Teacher: You must write the measurement that you get on the paper strips.

e.g:

Teacher asks pupils to joint these 2 paper strips closely and asks the pupils to measure the length of the paper strips together in order to find the total length.
Teacher: Now, joint your paper strips together. Then, you measure the length of the paper strips to find the total length. Is it same if we just add this length in vertical form.

Teacher proceeds with addition of units of length in cm and convert the answer to meters using long division.
Teacher: I want you to convert this length from cm to meters using division.
